St Nicholas Church, New Romney

St. Nicholas Church, New Romney dates from 1086 and was founded by Archbishop Odo who was at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Unlike most other Romney Marsh churches which stand on mounds St. Nicholas is entered by walking down a flight of steps. This is due to massive silting up around the building during a great storm in 1287. The church stood adjactent to the sea then which burst into the building. To this day there are tide mark stains visible on internal pillars.
